The City of Coral Gables has made sustainability and resiliency a top priority and recognizes that it must be a key focus within our city’s planning, policies, and services. Through the development of our Sustainability Management Plan in 2015, our city has set goals of reducing energy and water consumption, fuel usage, and overall greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2025 off our 2013 baseline levels.

Some of the city’s sustainability and resiliency accomplishments include:

• Joined the U.S. Climate Mayors in 2019
• 70 electric vehicles (EVs) in our city fleet – about 12%. The city ranks near the top of largest EV fleets in the nation.
• The city has installed over 41 charging points on city property and will continue with 145 charging stations and 246 charging points scheduled for installation over the next few years (surface parking lots, Minorca Garage, and Mobility Hub).
• Reduced energy consumption per square foot by over 23% since 2013 through lighting and HVAC upgrades.
• Reduced water consumption in city facilities by over 41.5% per square foot since 2013 by installing low-flow faucets and toilets.
• Achieved LEED Silver Certification on the Police and Fire Headquarters and Trolley Maintenance facilities. The city requires all future buildings (public and private) larger than 20,000 square feet to be built to LEED Silver or equivalent.
• In 2016, the city waived all permit fees for solar installations and other energy- and water-efficient projects.
• Extensive tree canopy with over 41% tree coverage. Designated Tree City USA in 1985.
• Developed elevation maps and conducted a vulnerability assessment examining critical infrastructure related to sea level rise projections, king tides and storm surge.
• In 2016, the city established a sea level rise mitigation fund with a goal to set aside $100 million by 2040.
• In 2017, the city passed a resolution in support of establishing 100% clean, renewable energy in the city and across the United States.
• Joined the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact in 2016.
• In 2021, the City achieved SolSmart Silver Designation through the Solar Foundation, International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the U.S. DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office.
• In 2022, Coral Gables became one of 140 other communities to achieve LEED for Cities GOLD Certification.
• In 2022, Coral Gables was one of 22 cities selected in Florida to participate in the 2022 Race to Zero Competition.
• In 2022, Coral Gables was named the eighth-best city in the country for ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) investments.
